State Senator (and current Oklahoma gubernatorial candidate) Randy Brogdon of Owasso (http://www.randybrogdon.com/) and State Representative Charles Key of State District 90 (http://charleskey.com/wp/) spoke to a crowd of nearly 200 members of 9/12 and other Conservative groups at the American Legion Post 73 in Del City, Oklahoma, Thursday evening September 3rd.
Though both men have authored 10th Amendment legislation at various times in their legislative careers, Senator Brogdon authored HJR1003 - a Resolution affirming Oklahoma's sovereign rights under the Tenth Amendment to the Constitution - during the Spring 2009 legislative session. The bill was offered to Governor Brad Henry that same session for passage into law.
Though overwhelmingly supported in both the House and the Senate, Governor Henry summarily vetoed HJR1003 in April.
Following the veto, Representative Key authored and submitted House Concurrent Resolution 1028 (HCR1028) in place of HJR1003. This concurrent resolution affirming Oklahoma's 10th Amendment rights did NOT need to be signed by Governor Henry and passed both the Senate and the House, again by overwhelming margins.
Since HCR1028 was not signed by the Governor, it is NOT law, but instead, a strong statement by the legislature and the people of this state that we hold Oklahoma to be a free, sovereign and independent state. Both Representative Key and Senator Brogdon patiently and knowledgeably answered questions regarding the potential ramifications of this legislation (among others) for nearly 2 hours.
Altogether, this was an excellent and successful example of the grassroots movement toward becoming educated in the ways in which regular citizens might thwart the trend of our current government to take away more and more of our personal freedoms and centralize them in the Federal government.
We thank both men heartily for their attendance and time, and we look forward to supporting them both as they work diligently to cover Oklahomans with the umbrella of our working Constitution through the 10th Amendment.
